I started playing D&D when it came in the red and blue boxes. Remember those? Well some time after the first hard cover Player’s Handbook came out my gaming group started a new first level campaign. That’s when I rolled up a character that has been with me to this day. He has gone through numerous changes over the years. Slight name changes and such, I even developed a younger brother, but always the same personality, background history and basic spirit.

These two brothers have either been played in (as PCs) or were in some part (as NPCs) involved with nearly every D&D campaign I have ever run. Which means every time I switched to the next evolution of D&D, I’ve converted these brothers over to that new rules set. Unfortunately, one of the brothers is a psionic and a 4E Psion character class has yet to be released. So, as of this writing, I’m in a holding pattern before I can update them. Come on PHB 3!!

Over these many years, as I have put a little of myself into these iconic characters, so to have these characters become a part of who I am. Not surprisingly, I identify more closely to various aspects of these brothers than any other character(s) I have ever created. So I wonder…

1. Do you have an iconic character?

and

2.  Am I the only one that keeps updating my old characters, iconic or not, with each new rules update?

Please let me know if this is pretty common among the veteran gamers out there and that I have not gone too O.C.D.
