I’ve been a fan of the Harry Potter movies since the Sorcerer’s Stone. One of many things I like about that world is the use of wands as an ambiguous instrument to casting spells. Years ago, in an effort to introduce that sort of element into my game, I came up with weirding wands. Of course, after reading about 4E’s inclusion of “implements” into the game system, I had a “Hey, that was my idea!” moment. Oh well, great minds and all that. Still, weirding wands are a viable option to bring the usefulness and spirit of certain implements into your 3.xE game. Enjoy.

Weirding Wand: Unlike most standard wands, the weirding wand is a tool used to help the wielder cast her own spells (i.e. memorized) and generally doesn’t contain powers of it’s own. These instruments help spellcasters to direct their personal spells more precisely, as well as giving them a potent boost.

The standard weirding wand allows the wielder to cast any spell that has a material component costing 1 gp or less without needing that component and she gains a +1 enhancement bonus to any spell cast using the wand.* This bonus applies to the spell’s DC, attempts to defeat the target’s SR and toward any attack rolls needed for the spell. In addition, casting a spell with a weirding wand takes fewer and simpler somatic components, thus any armor penalty the user would normally suffer is reduced by 5%.

More powerful versions (i.e. wands with higher enhancement bonuses, imbued with permanent cantrips (1-3), etc.) are always custom made, stylized wands bearing the original owner’s personal sigil, glyph or rune.

Note: this item cannot be used as a replacement of spell components when enchanting potions, scrolls or any other magic item.

*To clarify, you cannot use a weirding wand to boost spells cast from a source other than yourself, such as from a magic item, potion or scroll.

Faint varied; CL 3rd; Craft Wand, Eschew Materials feat; Price: 2,375 gp.
